FITCH, E. E., SAWMILL
Keno Springs
May 14, 1897: "E.W. Calkins left last Saturday for Klamath County, where he has been engaged as an engineer by E.E. Fitch in his saw mill. His family will remain in Medford. Earl is a cracking good fellow and a thoroughly well qualified engineer and Mr. Fitch will never find him wanting." (The Medford Mail)
August 24, 1899: “E.E. Fitch returned from Klamath county last week whither he went to protect his interests in the steam saw mill recently attached by the creditors of the man Ross Guilliams to whom he sold the property about a year ago, receiving only part cash on the sale. Guilliams absconded after getting in debt to the tune of about $3000. When he departed from Klamath county he carried away another man's wife, and his whereabouts at the present is not known. Mr. Fitch has retained as counsel, J.C. Rutenic, and is confident that he will lose nothing by the Guilliams transaction.--Lakeview Examiner.” (Klamath Republican)
November 30, 1899: “The suit of E.E. Fitch against Sheriff Kershner and A.D. Harpold to recover a sawmill, attached at the instance of the latter, and damages of $500, was commenced before a jury in the circuit court Monday and was concluded last evening, the verdict being that the property should be restored to Fitch, but without damages. As we learn, this case grew from a number of previous transactions, the original one being the sale of the mill, which is located at Keno Springs, to Ross Guilliams. It seems that he paid $900 on the property and after running it for a time abandoned it. During such time, Guilliams became indebted to A.D Harpold for between $700 and $800. When the former quit the mill the latter began suit and attached the property. Then, as Guilliams had only made a partial payment in securing the mill, Fitch instituted proceedings to replevy it. That is the action just concluded in the circuit court.” (Klamath Republican)
